Day 7: What Did We Really Use This Week?

A few days before the Flats and Handwashing Challenge started, I made a post about what we'll be using during the challenge, and I wanted to give you all an update. We used the 12 flats in rotation, alternated between the Snappi, pins and just pad-folding, but we only used 2 covers! If a family were able to purchase a down flats, a set of pins and 2 one-size covers, they could easily diaper their baby for very little cost. I also experimented with washing with baking soda after reading a thread on DiaperSwappers.com with (to my surprise) much success.
  • soak all dirty diapers until ready to wash (I ended up washing whenever it was convenient)
  • agitate in the dirty bucket to loosen anything that may have stuck on and ring out well, dump water
  • run hot water in the sink with 1/4 cup of baking soda, agitate with tongs or spoon (use a dedicated "washing utensil, and if you're water doesn't get hot enough, feel free to boil water to add to the sink)
  • let soak for 30 minutes then agitate everything by hand and scrub everything together to wash
  • drain water, and ring everything out well
  • fill sink with cool water, add 1/2 cup of vinegar and go through your washing steps again (agitating and scrubbing by hand) to rinse
  • drain water and ring everything out well, and hang to dry
This routine worked great, and baking soda and vinegar are very cheap.

*A special "thanks" to Diaper Junction for the donation of flats for this challenge*
