Something I've discovered as I hit my 30's and my skin started aging, is that my skin responds better to less product. I love Asian skincare products, and I enjoy a lengthy routine sometimes, but my skin does not need a 10 step routine on a daily basis. Even as my skin has changed from oily to combo, it all comes down to layering the right products together to get results, not the number of products in your lineup.
In this post I want to show my favorite products that work well with my combination acne-prone skin. I don't use these products or steps daily - I pick and choose what I want depending on my mood and what I feel that my skin needs. Sometimes that means three steps, sometimes that go all out and apply 10 or more steps. But no matter what, I only use what I want to use, and never allow myself to feel obligated to have a large routine, or like I need to use a vast assortment of products (no matter how much I enjoy them). Note: a few links in this post (marked with an asterisk) are affiliate links, and I will receive a small commission if you choose to make a purchase using them.

Asian Beauty Inspired Skincare Routine Video | Live for 2017
Once a year I put myself, in all my awkwardness, out there to create a visual example of how I put together my skincare routine, using some of my favorite products. If you're a visual learner like me, and feel more comfortable after seeing someone perform a task, then this video may be helpful to you!

What's I'm Using Right Now | January 2016 Skincare
I've always gotten good feedback on my quarterly routine posts, and find that they've been helpful to others for finding products that work for them. In return, I also stalk other peoples posts for ideas of what will work for me, but I digress.
Since I started blogging years ago my skin has always been the same - oily in the winter, more oily in the summer, acne prone with hormonal cystic acne, and dehydrated. Over the past year, however, my skin has changed almost completely, and I find that my routine needs lots of tweaking (and not just because I want to try new products). So for the new years I want to post a monthly update of what I'm currently using, how my skin is acting, and what I'm really loving or wanting to try next. I think this will make a neat reference for me but I also hope some of you may find it useful as well!

Fall 2016 Skincare Routine
The weather has been cooling off here in Minnesota (thank goodness) but with this change in weather also means there's a change in what I'm using to care for my skin. My skin is an oily pit of disaster and breakouts over the summer - the heat and humidity is my worst nightmare in the facial front - but once autumn rolls in my skin turns over a new leaf (much like the rest of nature) and becomes manageable.
Before we get started, I want to note that this post does contain affiliate links. If you click these links and make a purchase, I will receive a small commission. This is what helps fund this blog and everything I do here - including purchase review items and host giveaways.
My skin (at this point in time) is dehydrated, oily in the tzone, normal on the cheeks, and a bit flaky around the chin and mouth area, and bit sensitive (especially to alcohol).
My current concerns are hormonal acne (a few patches along the jawline), anti-aging, and hyper-pigmentation. Brightening my overall complexion is something I've been working on as well, but I feel like I've really made improvements there so it's not so much a concern anymore as it is just something I'm trying to maintain.
Favorite Morning Routine Products:
1. Banish The Starter Cleanser
(Press Sample from Banish Acne Scars)
I love this cleanser in the mornings because it's a lotion-type cleanser, making it very gentle. It's not stripping at all, and is perfect for washing away excess oiliness or product from the evening before. There are a lot of oils and extracts in this cleanser which makes it calming (for my skin) and leaves it feeling hydrated and fresh.
2. Cosrx Centella Water Alcohol-Free Toner
(Purchased from Cupidrop)
Centella is perfect for calming irritated skin, and hydrating. I like this toner because it's gentle and it tends to ease redness out of my skin the morning, as well as any inflamed acne bumps I may have. It comes in a 150ml bottle for under $20, and the spray cap allows me to use it as a mist throughout my routine if I so choose as well.
(Also available on Memebox, Amazon, and Jolse)
3. Blithe 9 Essential Seeds Vital Treatment Essence
(Purchased from Glow Recipe)
I haven't been using this as long as, say, my Cosrx products... but this has quickly become a favorite of mine for it's brightening qualities. It smells a bit like citrus, and sinks into my skin quickly. My skin feels smooth afterwards, and within a few minutes my skin looks noticeably brighter. I use it day and night but I can tell (by splashing a bit in my hand each use) that it's going to last a long while, so it's well worth the price.
(Also available on Sasa and KoreaDepart)
4. Cosrx Hyaluronic Acid Hydra Power Essence
(Purchased from Cupidrop) (Reviewed)
It's no secret that I love this essence - it's probably my favorite Cosrx product right now. It hydrates and brings moisture deep into the skin, without leaving behind any stickiness. My skin heals faster when I use this, doesn't get as oily, nor does it get as dry - it's perfect.
(Also available on Beauteque, Amazon, and Jolse)
5. Yuripibu Artichoke Power Essence
(Purchased from Glow Recipe)
This is another newer addition, but it's quickly become a favorite that I don't think I'll be looking to replace any time soon. This essence looks and feels like a silky lotion in a dropper bottle, but it spreads thinly onto the skin and absorbs quickly. It leaves your skin feeling buttery smooth, and keeps oil under control too. My pores appear smaller as well, which is really great in areas where they usually seem enlarged, like my cheeks. This essence also contains ceramides and squalene to heal and repair skin.
(Also available on Amazon)
6. Manyo Factory Ultra Moist Spa Gel Cream
(Purchased from Memebox)
This was a bit of a surprise product for me. I got a decant from Sam at Can I Put It On My Face, and was hesitant because it claims to be good for dry skin, but it's actually very lightweight and works perfectly for my oily-ish skin. I can use it both day and night, but since so few creams work for me during the daytime without being too heavy, I save this for day use only. I'm very impressed with this and will probably use it year-round.
(Also available on Manyo Factory and KoreaDepart)
7. Innisfree Perfect UV Protection Cream Triple Care SPF50+ PA+++
(Purchased from eBay)
Sunscreen is probably my least favorite part of skincare - if I didn't think it was necessary for, you know, warding off skin cancer and such... I would avoid it all together. Innisfree makes some great sunscreen if you're sensitive to alcohol like I am. I previously was in love with their No Sebum Sunblock, which has been discontinued, but I have thankfully found a suitable replacement in the form of their new Triple Care Protection Cream. It's white and pasty, but it does absorb pretty well and leaves a minimal white cast on a pale gal like myself. It leaves a satin matte finish, and doesn't break me out, so I'm not moving on until this one disappears.
(Also available on Innisfree World)
Favorite Evening Routine Products:
1. Innisfree Apple Juicy Cleansing Oil
(Purchased from Memebox)
This was a toss up between the Elizavecca Natural 90% Olive Cleansing Oil, and I really enjoy both (and they're both mineral oil free) but truth be told I'm drawn to the candy apple scent of the Innisfree Cleansing Oil. It removes makeup and sunscreen completely, and is able to clean my pores well enough to loosen up grits (or hardened oil clogs) while massaging.
(Also available on Amazon and Innisfree)
2a. Klavuu Pure Pearlsation Revitalizing Cleansing Foam
(Press Sample from Mochi Beaute)
This... I've actually only been using a very short time, but I'm already in love with it. It's been a very long time that I've been so impressed by a cleanser that I'm excited to wash my face - but this cleanser really raises the bar. It's pearly white, it's creamy, it produces fluffy bubbles, and it leaves my face looking bright and feeling smooth. It's not at all drying either, so I really have no complaints.
(Also available on Klavuu)
2b. Manyo Factory Active Refresh Herb Peel (once a week)
(Purchased from Memebox)
Exfoliating is a hard habit to break, but a peeling gel is a gentle alternative to a sugar scrub ripping at your skin. The gel combines with oil and dead skin cells to form little gummy balls that gently exfoliate your skin, but this particular gel also has minuscule bits in it as well, so it's a bit more abrasive than other (super gentle) gommage products.
(Also available at MelodyCosme, KoreaDepart, and Manyo Factory)
3. Primary Raw DoYou Soy Milk Ferment Cleanse Toner
(Purchased)
I got a great deal on this from a friend, and was thrilled to finally give it a try - it claims to tighten pores, calm skin, and remove debris leftover from cleansing. It has no odor, but it does make my skin feel soft and clean. It doesn't leave any stickiness behind, and my essences absorb very quickly afterwards. I haven't decided yet if I'll repurchase, but right now I'm really enjoying it!
(Also available at Glow Recipe)
4a. Guerisson 9 Complex Essence from Claire's Korea
(Purchased from Memebox) (Reviewed)
This is the one product in my stash that I can call a "holy grail" of my skincare routine (though the Artichoke Essence is coming up quickly as a second). The star of this essence is horse oil, which is great for acne prone skin (you can read about why in my review). It has a grapefruit scent, and is lightweight but hydrating. I use this year round, but I really slather it on in the cooler months. It helps my acne, brightens my skin, and hydrates.
(Also available on Amazon)
4b. Blithe Seeds Essence
(Purchased from Glow Recipe)
The Guerisson horse oil essence has been my favorite for over a year now, but I still get anxious and want to test new products. This essence has quickly become a favorite of mine for it's brightening qualities.
5. Yuripibu Artichoke Power Essence
(Purchased from Glow Recipe)
I probably don't need to be using this twice a day, and I'm definitely going through it pretty quickly (I can see this bottle lasting a month tops, which is a bit crazy considering it's a $40 essence) but it makes my skin feel so nice I just can't help it!
6. Tosowoong Propolis Sparkle Ampoule
(Purchased from Amazon)
Propolis is great for healing acne, lightening hyper-pigmentation, anti-aging, and moisturizing. This ampoule contains 80% pure bee propolis, smells sweet, and has a watery gel consistency that absorbs well. It lasts a long time too. This hits almost all the issues I'm looking to target, so it stays in my routine year-round.
(Also available at Memebox)
7. Naruko Magnolia Brightening and Firming Serum / Lotion
(Gift)(Purchased from eBay)
Short story first: I received this Magnolia Lotion from a friend, and that really kick-started the brightening phenomenon I've been experiencing lately. I was so impressed by the seemingly immediate results of this lotion that I went on a Naruko-binge and ordered an embarrassing amount of product from them. When they started arriving, however, I received one broken, some expired, and some expiring in less than a month, while others were fine. I received only one response (about the broken item, after emailing three times), and only that one item was replaced. Despite how well their products work, I actually won't be repurchasing anything from them.
If you read my story, you know I got the lotion from the friend and it worked amazingly with my skin. It's lightweight but hydrating, I was using it as a daytime moisturizer, but I liked layering with it once my skin got a little dryer so I moved it to a layer in the evening. I ordered myself the serum from this line, and am surprised that it's actually thicker than the lotion. It smells the same as the lotion and seems to give an incredible brightening effect. But I feel these two items are interchangeable, and if I do repurchase one of these items, it'll probably be the serum just because of the pump bottle.
(Also available on Naruko)
8. Sheet Mask (most nights)
Sheet masks are the key (for me) to glowing, hydrated skin. Masking on a nightly basis helps tremendously keeping my dehydration in check, which in turn keeps my skin from produces extra fine lines or looking dull. I'll list some affordable options that don't break the bank by masking daily, as well as some of my all-time favorites.
$ Dermal Collagen Sheet Masks (Amazon / Amazon)
$ Lululun Moisture Balancing Masks (Amazon)
$ BonVivant Pure Mask Packs (Memebox)
$$ TonyMoly Pureness 100 Masks (Amazon)
$$ Freeset Donkey Milk Healing Mask (Memebox)

$$ Papa Recipe Bombee Black Mask (Amazon)

$$ Tosowoong Pure Masks (Memebox)
$$ Illi Green Tea Brightening Mask (Memebox)
$$$ Maskingdom Masks (Mochi Beaute)
9. Manyo Factory Bifidalacto Cream
(Purchased from Memebox)
Eye cream is one of those things that I hate, but I use because I know I should. Since fine lines are inevitable and I'm not getting any younger, I've been making an effort by applying a cream specifically for firming to my eye area each night. This Bifidalacto Cream isn't technically an eye cream, but it comes in a fancy tube and keeps my eye lines in check, so I'm gonna keep using it that way!
(Also available on MelodyCosme, KoreaDepart, and Amazon)
10. Curology
(Reviews)
Curology is my lone active product right now. I used to use BHA, but it always causes closed comedones along my jawline that don't purge over time. I occationally use AHA, but right now I'm finding it's not necessary with Tretinoin in my Curology prescription. I may start using it again in the future, but for the time being I'm holding off.
I use Curology to help battle my hormonal acne (at which is does a good job) and to help with my anti-aging concerns (at which is does a great job). It costs $20 a month, with a new bottle arriving every three months (or sooner if you manually request it). That cost includes unlimited online consultations with your assigned dermatologist as well, so I find the cost is well worth it.

11a. Banila Co Miss Flower & Mr Honey Cream
(Purchased from Memebox) (Reviewed)
My favorite nighttime cream has been replaced - the Freeset Donkey Milk 3D Moisture Cream was another "holy grail" last year, but it's since become too difficult to track down, and the price is much higher than what I was paying, so I moved on. This cream from Banila Co is thick like Vaseline, but it absorbs beautifully. I was worried it would be too heavy for my oily skin but it hydrates and softens my skin like a dream, and it smells like honey. The occlusive-ness of this cream also allows my skin a better chance at healing overnight as well.
(Also available on Amazon and Jolse)
11b. Cosrx Ultimate Moisturizing Honey Overnight Mask
(Purchased from Amazon)
Just like the Tosowoong Propolis Sparkle Ampoule, the propolis in this sleeping pack is great for healing acne, lightening hyper-pigmentation, anti-aging, and moisturizing. This mask contains 85% pure bee propolis, has almost no scent, and has a gel consistency that absorbs well. It's also very hydrating without feeling sticky. I always wake up with a hydrated, glowing complexion after using this.

My Current Skincare Routine for Spring/Summer 2016
I think sharing my routine is one of my favorite things to post about on this blog. I love being able to share what's been working for me as my skin transforms and (with any luck) improves.
If you're new to my blog or you need a refresher; I'm 30 years old with oily skin and hormonal cystic acne. My skin is also dehydrated (meaning the oiliness gets better with added moisture), sensitive, and is starting to show mild signs of aging (like small lines and wrinkles). I have been battling hyper-pigmentation from sun damage and acne scarring, which has improved greatly over the past few months.
So here's my current heap of products that I currently have in rotation:
Most of these I'm sure you've seen from me before. It's been a rough year and I haven't tried much in the line of new products, but what I have used it working great for me, so no complaints, as boring as it may sound to some. I don't use all these products daily, and I don't always use the same products daily, but today I am going to share my base routines with you that I use most often and know I can use no matter how my skin is acting.
MY BASE-LINE MORNING ROUTINE
Cosrx Low pH Good Morning Gel Cleanser
I've heard people with dry skin say this is too stripping but I personally find it to be perfect, and have family members with dry skin who also enjoy using this, so of course Your Milage May Vary (YMMV, not everything works the same for me as it might for you). It has a tea tree scent, and leaves my skin feeling smooth and looking clear. The scent usually perks me up in the morning too. It is a gel cleanser, but it also foams up - on it's own or using a foaming net - and I think that also makes it a bit more enjoyable to use when you're struggling to stand by the sink in the morning.
You can pick up this cleanser on Memebox USA*, Cupidrop, MelodyCosme, Amazon*, and Jolse.
Cosrx Centella Water Alcohol-Free Toner
This is a very calming toner, and I even use it occasionally as a cleansing water when I really don't feel like going through the whole process of washing my face. Centella is great for calming irritated skin and acne, so it's perfect for me. It's very gentle, and I find it easily tones down redness my face has in the mornings.
You can purchase this toner on Memebox USA*, Cupidrop, and Jolse.
Cosrx Galactomyces 95 Whitening Power Essence
This is one of my very first Cosrx purchases, and the item that drew me in to explore their products further. It has a very light fermented scent and uses it's galactomyces to lightly hydrate and prep your skin to allow it to absorb the rest of the products in your routine better. This essence also contain 2% niacinamide which helps brighten my skin as well - a positive for someone who is trying to fight off hyper-pigmentation.
You can purchase this essence on Memebox USA*, Cupidrop, MelodyCosme, Amazon*, and Jolse.
Neulii Snail Bee Anti-Wrinkle Serum
This is a more recent addition to my routine and I'm really enjoying it so far. It's much lighter than the Cosrx Advanced Snail 96 Mucin Power Essence which is great for my skin in the summer months. The heat this time of year really kick starts oil production in my skin, and while hydration still helps with the dehydrated end of things, there is still a bit of plain old oiliness that lingers when it's hot outside, so this serum is perfect for hydrating without making my skin sticky or over-hydrated. Another plus with this serum is that is contains my current favorite skincare ingredient: propolis - so it really is a winner for me as far as treating my skin's current conditions and fighting off additional signs of aging and acne.
You can purchase this serum on Jolse and RoseRoseShop.
Cosrx Oil-Free Ultra-Moisturizing Lotion (with Birch Sap)
I've reviewed this lotion on my blog in the past, and it's still a great hydration in my opinion. It's lightweight but it delivers a great deal of moisture, and it perfect for daytime for me. This lotion does contain butylene glycol, which can cause a greasy film on the surface of skin, so I make sure to pay attention not to over-apply, but it plays nice with all the sunscreens I've tried so it's seemingly earned a permanent place in my daytime routine.
You can purchase this lotion on Memebox USA*, Cupidrop, MelodyCosme, and Amazon*.
Cosrx Advanced Snail 92 All In One Cream
My first Cosrx cream, recommended to my by Cosrx themselves since I have oily skin. This has a thin creamy gelish texture, and is slightly sticky in traditional snail mucin form. I find this cream works great for my skin during the day when my skin is flaky or dry from tretinoin or just other products I'm testing out. It absorbs nicely and does not contain butylene glycol like the birch sap lotion, so it won't leave a film if that ingredient tends to cause a problem for you. Snail mucin is also good for regenerating the skin, so I enjoy using this to not only help heal skin that has been plagued by acne but also for regenerating skin that has fine lines or is loosing collagen.
You can purchase this cream on Memebox USA*, Cupidrop, MelodyCosme, and Jolse.
Cosrx Centella Blemish Cream
Oh Cosrx, how I love thee.. I've already reviewed the Centella Blemish Ampoule, which also features centella as the star ingredient (as does the toner mentioned above) but the cream is like my "heavy hitter" for stubborn blemishes. Cystic acne is a painful, terrible, painful, swollen, painful thing to deal with, and after trying so many different creams and liquids, this is what I found to work best for me. The daytime is worst for my acne because I'm awake to feel the throbbing pain and am more apt to touch it and sigh in disgust over how nasty it is. This cream does a great job at toning down swelling and redness, and by the end of the day there's a noticeable difference in how big and painful my cystic acne is.
You can purchase this cream on Memebox USA*, Cupidrop, MelodyCosme, and Jolse.
Innisfree Eco Safety No Sebum Sunblock
You'd think within 30 years I'd have been able to find a nice handful of sunscreens that work well for me - but then my life would be just a hint easier, so of course that's not the case. In the past year I've thoroughly tested a few different Asian sunscreens that fit my criteria of being alcohol free and only containing physical filters, with a few more on my list to purchase (when I earn enough for a new blog review haul). This sunscreen from Innisfree is the only one so far that doesn't break me out or cause such intense dryness that my skin literally peels off during the day (I'm looking at you Sunkiller Baby Milk, aka SKINkiller). It is mattefying, hence the "no sebum" in it's name, but even on my drier days this pairs perfectly with my snail cream and I experience no unusual dryness. This does, however, leave a white cast, which I counteract with a tinted face powder or light coverage bb cream.
You can purchase this sunscreen on Amazon*, and Jolse.
MY BASE-LINE EVENING ROUTINE
Elizavecca Natural 90% Olive Cleansing Oil
I have a lot of samples of cleansing oils that I've tested lately, and while I love some (like the illi Anti-Aging Cleansing Oil), none of them really leave my skin feeling the way this cleansing oil does. It's thicker like olive oil, but it gently lifts away dead and flaky skin as well as clogs in my pores. It emulsifies very well too! I've noticed my pores seem much cleaner when I use this daily, which I haven't experienced with other cleansing oils, so I really think this is "the one" for me.
You can purchase this cleansing oil on Memebox USA*.
Papa Recipe White Flower Clear Up Enzyme Powder Cleanser
I have reviewed the Tosowoong Enzyme Powder Wash on the blog in the past, and at the time I really loved it, but it started to dry out my skin with regular use so I had to lighten up my usage. Then I met this powder cleanser and I really think it's love this time around. This powder cleanser has tiny grains, and they dissolve quickly and easily with a small amount of water - I just dampen my hands and pour a small amount of powder on one, then rub them together to dissolve and foam the cleanser. This powder cleanser is a much gentler alternative to the Tosowoong powder wash, and runs along the same price range - it's a win win!
You can purchase this cleanser on Memebox USA*, Amazon*, and WishTrend.
Cosrx AHA/BHA Clarifying Treatment Toner
Another earlier Cosrx purchase of mine that I still haven't gotten around to reviewing, but have repurchased many times already. This is a toner with a small amount of acids to lower the pH. Some people think this toner is too harsh but I personally have had no issues with this toner drying out my skin or causing any irritation. This is perfect for prepping my skin for acids, or just cleaning up after cleansing my skin. The low price point and the fact that it's lowering my skins' pH level and (hopefully) helping ward off bacteria-causing acne keeps me coming back for more.
You can purchase this toner on Memebox USA*, Cupidrop, and Jolse.
Cosrx AHA 7 Whitehead Power Liquid
I want to note right away that I use this interchangeably with the Papa Recipe White Flower Clear 8% AHA Gel - but find that the Cosrx is much easier to locate so it's what I have been repurchasing the most. In terms of performance, I find both AHA products work similarly, despite the 1% difference in AHA strength. Since I am using tretinoin (explanation below) I only use Alpha Hydroxy Acid once or twice a week to assist in lightening hyper-pigmentation and speeding up cell turnover and clear out clogged pores and battle acne.
You can purchase this active on Memebox USA*, Cupidrop, MelodyCosme, Amazon*, and Jolse.
Cosrx Hyaluronic Acid Hydra Power Essence
Hyaluronic Acid has become my best friend since I discovered my skin is actually dehydrated and not just super oily. HA can hold up to 4,000x it's weight in water, so it pulls liquid from the outside of your skin inward and holds it there until it's absorbed. Cosrx uses sodium hyaluronate (a derivative of HA) to allow the molecules to penetrate deeper into your skin. This product has been a godsend in decreasing (when kept up with application - eliminating) my flakiness and dry patches on my otherwise oil-slick of a face. It's also greatly decreased my skins' oil production to a near-normal level. HA is also plumping, which helps out with my fine lines around my forehead and eye area as well.
You can purchase this essence on Cupidrop, Amazon*, and Jolse.
Tosowoong Propolis Sparkle Ampoule
This is a newer product to my arsenal too, but it's quickly rose to the top and become one that i have backups for already, because it really works that well for my skin. I at one point thought I was sensitive to propolis because of my bee allergy, but it seems that it's more dependent on those select products as a whole vs the ingredient popping up in a fair number of products my skin hates. This ampoule contains 80% propolis extract, and has a thin gel texture. It applies easily, however, and soaks into the skin like water. This ampoule makes my skin look so much brighter and healthier, and the propolis has antibacterial properties that help fight acne. I've also heard it can help fight signs of aging, so, you know, prevention and all that.
You can purchase this ampoule on Memebox USA*, Cupidrop, and Amazon*.
Goodal Camellia Firming Water Oil
I really like Goodal for their fermented ingredients but find their products often contain too much fragrance for me. I prefer this Camellia Water Oil over the newer (green bottle) Waterest Water Oil due to texture and scent. This water oil has a gel-like consistency that leaves a slight oil film when applied, that absorbs very quickly. I use this product purely for prevention against signs of again, and so far I feel like it has possibly helped firm my face a little more, as my fine lines have been not as noticeable lately. I use it daily now but I am still undecided if I'll repurchase it or try something similar once it's gone.
You can purchase this essence on Memebox USA*.
Guerisson 9 Complex Essence
I've reviewed this essence on the blog before and talked about it a lot on my Instagram, and it's still a favorite of mine. Horse oil is high in linoleic acid, which is lacking in acne plagued skin. By adding in oils high in linoleic acid it helps your skin naturally combat acne - so there we are. The oil itself is similar to our skins' natural sebum, so it tricks my skin into thinking it's already made enough oil, plus the oil has the properties needed to also be part of my acne-fighting skincare team.
You can purchase this essence on Memebox USA* and Amazon*.
Curology
You've probably seen my updates about my progress with Curology in blog posts by now, and I'm still very pleased with the results I'm receiving with this tele-dermatology service. My current prescription includes .04% tretinoin (treats and prevents wrinkles, stimulates collagen growth and fights acne), 1% clindamycin (antibiotic and anti-inflammatory to fight acne causing bacteria), and 7% azelaic acid (lightens dark spots; antibacterial, anti-fungal, and unclogs pores).
You can receive your first month free using my referral link.
Elizavecca Milky Piggy Sea Salt Cream
Another newer addition to my routine, but I have fallen madly and deeply in love with this cream - on evenings when my skin is extra oily and breaking out anyway. This is a gummy gel textured cream that massages onto the skin leaving a damp dewy residue behind - But a mere few seconds later it vanishes and just sinks straight into your skin and leaves a plump, bouncy yet matte finish behind. What could be better than matte hydration? Well, the sea salt helps dry out my acne without drying out my skin - I seriously have no complaints about this cream, and it actually works well during the day too!
You can purchase this cream on Amazon*.
Banila Co Miss Flower & Mr Honey Cream
This cream came as a surprising love for me. I tried a sample from Sam at CANIPUTITONMYFACE, and couldn't believe how well it worked with my skin. It has the texture of Vaseline, and freaked me out at first thinking it would just clog my pores. But much to my surprise it actually absorbs very well, even on my oily skin, and leaves my skin hydrated and seals in the previous hydrating products very well. If that doesn't convince you that you need to try it, then imagine using a cream that smells like fresh sweet honey - yum - heavenly.
You can purchase this cream on Memebox USA*, Amazon*, and Jolse.
Cosrx Ultimate Moisturizing Honey Overnight Mask
This is one of my favorite Cosrx products. It has a gel texture and contains 85% propolis. This sleeping mask actually contains propolis, not honey - and as I mentioned in my excerpt about the Tosowoong Propolis Sparkle Ampoule, propolis is great for fighting acne, lightening hyper-pigmentation and fighting signs of aging. This is a very hydrating pack that leaves my skin bouncy and plump, but doesn't leave it sticky and it absorbs into my skin (even on top of everything else) perfectly. It really is a great product, and sometimes I use it as a day cream too. I've yet to find anything else with such a light texture but can hydrate so well, and offer so many benefits to the skin, like this honey mask can. And on top of that, it's affordable, so I can go through it as crazily as I have without feeling guilty.
You can purchase this pack on Memebox USA*, Cupidrop, MelodyCosme, Amazon*, and Jolse.
So that's it!
My morning and evening base routines that I build off of each day. If you've read my post about depression you know that I don't always use this many products, and sometimes I use more if I'm in the mood. These are the products that are, basically, my current favorites based on my skin concerns and the weather, but sometimes interchange with other products from my arsenal.
How does your routine change when the weather starts to warm up?

Skincare Routine Video!
A year ago (seriously... ) I posted a video on YouTube showcasing my AB Evening Routine, and it's still my top video to date. I hate recording myself, and expected no one to watch it except the people who asked if I would do one, but apparently it's been helpful to see someone do their routine and know where to fit products in.
I'm currently hosting a giveaway on Instagram to celebrate my two year anniversary of The Glitter Chic (don't worry if you're not on IG, I'm planning a blog giveaway in April for my 30th birthday) and to enter I asked for recommendations on what you'd like to see reviewed this year. One of the suggestions was another routine video!

Evening Skincare Routine [Winter 2015]
I posted my morning skincare routine for the winter months yesterday, so today I'm posting my evening routine. Even though my skin is oily, it is also dehydrated and since I'm using tretinoin daily my skin dries out easily. For the winter I focus on light layers just as I do in the summer, but I also focus on hydration more to prevent tightness or flakiness. All products in this post were purchased by me, but many purchase links are affiliate links that keep my blog going.
My Skin: oily, dehydrated, acne-prone, hormonal cystic acne, sensitive to alcohol, mild anti-aging concerns.
Balm Cleanser:
Banila Co Clean It Zero; available on Memebox USA & Amazon | Ingredients
Botanic Farm Grain Ferment Cleansing Sherbert; available on Memebox USA | Ingredients
Nooni Snowflake Cleanser; available on Memebox USA | Ingredients
Shara Shara Berry Berry Cleansing Sherbert; available on Memebox USA & KoreaDepart | Ingredients
The first step of my evening routine is usually an oil-based cleanser. I prefer balm cleanser because they're much easier for me to maneuver and get onto my face. I'm not married to any one balm cleanser, as I've found the one's I've used so far all work the same. They all remove sunscreen, foundation, and my eye makeup.
Second Cleanser:
Tosowoong Enzyme Powder Wash; available on Memebox USA & Amazon | Ingredients
Re:cipe Slowganic Cleanser (Green Tea); available on Memebox USA & TesterKorea | Ingredients
Every evening I use a regular cleanser, usually low pH, but always something that just washes away dirt, oil, and grime from the day. If I used my balm cleanser before-hand then this cleanser makes sure there's no leftover product or reside on my face too. I have a whole line-up of cleansers next to my bathroom sink, but these two are my current favorites. Both foam up nicely for me, but the Tosowoong is more of an exfoliating cleanser (not rough, but because of the enzymes from the papain) and the Re:cipe is more gentle and feels like a marshmallow on my face (literally - it's wet, spongy, and moist in the jar it comes in).
Acwell 5.5 Licorice pH Balancing Cleansing Toner
Available on MelodyCosme | Ingredients
I've used this toner in my rotation for a few weeks now and it's the only one left. I like the scent (it's fresh, almost citrusy) and makes my skin feel nice - like smooth and not tight like it sometimes can after cleansing in my dry-ass house... This is a good prep step for lowering my skins' pH before actives after rinsing my cleanser off with our hard high pH water too.
Cosrx AHA 7 Whitehead Power Liquid
Available on Memebox USA & Jolse | Ingredients
I use AHA (alpha-hydroxy acid) almost every night because I feel like it helps keep my breakouts down. AHA speeds up cell turnover and helps renew your skin by pushing out impurities (like blemishes, wrinkles, and hyperpigmentation) sooner. This one from Cosrx is pretty gentle so I don't mind using it often.
Stridex Maximum Strength (Alcohol Free)
Available on Amazon | Ingredients
Stridex contains BHA (beta-hydroxy acids / salicylic acid) that help prevent blackheads from forming and cleaning oil-clogged pores. I have found that my skin takes BHA a little too seriously, and I only use it twice a week. On those nights I don't use AHA to prevent my skin from becoming overexfoliated.
Curology
Get your first month free using my referral link! | My Curology Progress
I've posted about Curology a few times now, and while it's not Asian beauty related it is definitely something that has made a huge difference in my skin. It's almost eliminated my hormonal acne and it's cleared out my pores so well that I rarely get a bad breakout any more. I currently have a prescription of 9% azelaic acid, 1% clindamycin, and .009% tretinoin which combats acne, hyperpigmentation, and signs of aging.
Cosrx Galactomyces 95 Whitening Power Essence
Available on: Amazon, Jolse | Ingredients
This is how I quickly add in moisture after using my actives. Galactomyces has been an ingredient I've loved since I first happened upon it in a past Memebox. It hydrates (lightly) and makes my skin thirsty - not dehydrated, but thirsty for more hydration from other products. I'm still unsure of brightening effects from this specific product, but I do like how it meshes with my skin so this is a product I continue to use. I usually give my skin 15 minutes or so to fully absorb my Curology prescription, then I gently pat a couple pumps of this onto my skin and continue on with the hydration!
Guerisson 9 Complex Essence
Avaliable on: Memebox USA, Amazon, KoreaDepart | Ingredients
I recently reviewed this essence and found it to be something that works great with my skin. It smells slightly of grapefruit. It's hydrating, thick enough to form a protective layer on my skin, but still completely absorbs after a couple minutes. This essence has helped my dehydration tremendously and I feel like it has helped my acne as well.
All In One Ampoule
Pictured above is a decant bottle of the Shara Shara Aqua AIO Ampoule (Memebox USA)which is a favorite of mine, as well as the Shara Shara Berry AIO Ampoule (Memebox USA), but I happen to have four different decants of ampoules that I alternate between. They hydrate very well, and deliver a nice mix of ingredients that I like to believe help improve my skin. Maybe not, but what is having a lengthy routine if you're not having a little fun, right? But the hydration is there if you really need a reason...
Sheet Masks
This is pictured above, but almost every night I use a sheet mask for 30 minutes to one hour. I use all different types and brands, but I use them because they deliver hydration right into my skin with a barrier preventing the moisture from escaping, and they give my skin a nice plumping effect. They're also a great way to unwind after a long day. You can see reviews of past sheet masks I've used on my spreadsheet.
Sleeping Pack:
Ladykin Vanpir Dark Repairing Water Mask
Available on KoreaDepart | Ingredients
This is a light gel that abosrbs into my skin very well. It's hydrating and plumping, but I do save it for nights where my skin is fairly hydrated before this step, just to seal in moisture. My skin is always plump and bright in the morning after I use this pack.
Skin Ceramic Donkey Milk Yogurt All-In-One Gel Cream
Available on Memebox USA | Ingredients
I've recently found that this cream is too sticky to use during the day. It absorbs quickly if I use a small amount, but then I don't get the hydration I need. So I reserve this for a pm sleeping pack. This is heavier than the Ladykin, so I use it when I know my skin is getting extra dry, or when I didn't use a sheet mask. I also enjoy using the Freeset Donkey Milk 3D Moisture Cream (Memebox USA) at night as well because it's so hydrating, but because of the higher price point I feel a little less guilt piling the Skin Ceramic on in thicker layers at night, and save the Freeset for during the day.

Morning Skincare Routine [Winter 2015]
The weather has been slowly getting cooler for a couple months now, but the snow is now falling and the heater in our home is going full bore - which means my oily skin is becoming more dehydrated than ever. Today I'm going to share my morning skincare routine with you. Most of these products I've purchased on my own, others were gifts from friends, none are sponsored & and many purchase links are affiliate links which help me keep my blog (and my home) afloat.
My morning routine usually contains six steps, which are shown above. Sometimes I'll swap a product out for something different in my stash depending on my skin that morning or my skins' current needs, but this is pretty average for me.
My Skin: oily, dehydrated, acne-prone, hormonal cystic acne, sensitive to alcohol, mild anti-aging concerns.
Hada Labo Gokujyn Hyaluronic Acid Foaming Cleanser
Available on: Amazon | Ingredients
This is a very gentle cleanser that doesn't strip or dry out my skin. It's instantly foaming from the pump so I don't have to mess around with a foaming net in the morning either. It has no scent, cleanses away any dirt or oils that have accumulated overnight, and rinses away easily.
Dear by Enprani Moistfull Booskin
Available on: Memebox USA, Amazon, KoreaDepart | Ingredients
I purchased this initially to be used as a hydrating essence after toning and using my actives in the evening. But shortly after it arrived I found an updated ingredients list indicating that this product contained ethanol. I gave it a try because there is so much more to this than just alcohol, but unfortunately it dehydrates my skin so I use it as a hydrating toner in the morning. After cleansing I just apply some of this to a cotton pad and wipe it on my face. The small amount I use to pick up any remaining reside doesn't seem to cause any drying effects at all, and the thicker texture of this really feels nice on my skin in the morning.

Goodal Waterest Lasting Water Oil
Available on: Memebox USA, Club Clio | Ingredients
This is another hydrating product. It's not heavy at all, but still brings a small amount of oil to my skin that battles my dehydration problem, and helps keep my excess oil production down and my pores a little easier to keep clean. This is something I've fallen in love with.
There is a newer version of this in a green bottle with a little different ingredients, but I have not tried it yet.
Guerisson 9 Complex Essence
Avaliable on: Memebox USA, Amazon, KoreaDepart | Ingredients
I recently reviewed this essence and found it to be something that works great with my skin. It smells slightly of grapefruit. Freeset Donkey Milk 3D Moisture Cream
Available on: Memebox USA | Ingredients
This is a cream that I'm still experimenting with a bit, but so far I'm really enjoying it. Donkey milk has been a holy grail ingredient for me, so far I have yet to hate any product I try with this as a star ingredient. Before this I was only using the Skin Ceramic Donkey Milk Yogurt All-In-One Gel Cream (Memebox USA) and it worked well as long as I used a small amount - despite it's gel consistency it wouldn't fully absorb into my skin if I used too thick of a layer. The Freeset cream is thick, stringy, and has a light scent - but it after a few minutes this dries down to a semi-matte finish and keeps my skin hydrated and my oil-production lower (like, almost normal) for the day. It's expensive though, so I still alternate with the Skin Ceramic cream since it's about half the price.

Updated Skincare Routine with Product Recommendations | October 2015
Since discovering Asian beauty products and how effective and unique they are to the beauty world, my skin has flipped a total 180 and is something that I never thought I'd see it be in my lifetime. Earlier this year, I filmed a YouTube video showcasing how I performed my evening skincare routine, but didn't go into any depth about products used or why I chose the types or products or steps that I did. In this post, I'm hoping to cover what steps I take for my skincare routine, the types of products I use for each step, and some options that I've tried for that step as well.
I'm currently testing more products, so products I like in this post may change in a month or may stay the same. These are just some current products I've tried and enjoy for each step of my routine.
My skin is: oily, prone to acne, hyper-pigmented, can have dry patches in the winter, beginning to develop fine lines in certain areas & sensitive to alcohol.
Step One: Cleansing (including makeup removal at night)
Cleansing is the biggest step where I really pay attention to what the pH of the product is. I like to use an oil cleanser at night to remove my makeup, and since these cleansers are oil based, the pH doesn't generally matter - but when I use a regular cleanser it really does. I am currently using a oil cleanser from Innisfree, but to be honest I really prefer balm cleansers. They don't necessarily work better, but they work well and are less messy. I use the same oil cleanser on my eyes as I use on my face. Each one will come with it's own instructions, but I generally take a small amount and massage it onto my dry face and gently onto my closed eyes. After a minute or so I wipe my face with a damp cloth then rinse it with warm water. This minimizes the mess I make at the sink but still allows the oil to emulsify and rinse away cleanly from my face.
From what I've tried, I recommend:
~Innisfree: Apple Juicy Cleansing Oil (Memebox / Amazon - affiliate links)
~Banila Co: Clean It Zero Cleansing Balm (Memebox / Amazon - affiliate links)
I haven't dabbled too far into Korean cleansers because, in my experience so far, their cleansers are high foaming with a high pH and drying to the skin. Of course there are exceptions, but I have not tried them yet. In the morning I only use a regular cleanser, but at night I always use a regular cleanser after my oil cleanser to remove anything the oil cleanser may have left behind, including excess oil. My biggest concerns when searching for a cleanser with a low pH (I've found that low pH cleansers or more gentle on my skin, don't dry it out, and help my acne) and that it doesn't contain alcohol.
From what I've tried, I recommend:
Su:m37: Miracle Rose Cleansing Stick (Memebox / Amazon - affiliate links)
Hada Labo: Hyaluronic Acid Cleansing Foam (Amazon - affiliate link)
Step Two: Toner
I rely on my toner to be a bit of a multi-tasker. I like my toner to have a lower pH like my cleanser, but I also want it to soothe my skin in the even that cleansing stripped it too much or if I'm just having a bad skin day in general.
From what I've tried, I recommend:
~Cosrx: AHA/BHA Clarifying Treatment Toner (Memebox / Amazon - affiliate links)
~Cosrx: Galactomyces Alcohol-Free Toner (Memebox / Amazon - affiliate links)
Step Three: Acid Treatment or Vitamin C
This step is dependent on either morning or evening. In the morning, I use a vitamin c serum because it helps lighten my dark spots, and the antioxidant properties of vitamin c help protect my skin from environmental damage during the day.
From what I've tried, I recommend:
~Paula's Choice: Resist C15 Super Booster (Paula's Choice *new customers receive $10 off their order of $15+ with my referral link* - affiliate link)
~C20 C21.5 Original Pure Vitamin C Serum (Amazon - affiliate link)
In the evening I use an acid treatment to help accelerate the cell turnover of my skin. This pushes impurities out sooner and also speeds up the lightening of dark spots and scarring. I use BHA two nights a week and AHA one night a week to avoid over-exfoliating my skin.
From what I've tried, I recommend:
~Paula's Choice: 2% BHA Liquid (Paula's Choice *new customers receive $10 off their order of $15+ with my referral link* - affiliate links)
~Paula's Choice: Resist Weekly Resurfacing Treatment with 10% AHA (Paula's Choice *new customers receive $10 off their order of $15+ with my referral link* - affiliate link)
Step Four: Essence
This step is what I feel helps prepare my skin for the upcoming products I'm about to "feed" it. In the morning, I skip to a moisturizer after this step, but this step opens up the door for my evening routine.
From what I've tried, I recommend:
~Missha: First Treatment Essence (Memebox / Amazon - affiliate links)
~Secret Key: Starting Treatment Essence (Memebox / Amazon - affiliate links)
Step Five: Prescription Treatment
Curology (formerly Pocketderm) is now an essential part of my skincare regime. It's not an Asian beauty product, but it's done wonders to my skin and probably the one product I simply cannot live without at this point. My Curology updates can be found here.
Use my referral link to sign up for Curology to receive your first month free.
Step Six: Serums/Ampoules
This is an evening-only step. Sometimes I try a serum that really does help my skin and I end up using the whole bottle. This step was easier last year (as I mentioned earlier) but I currently look for serums/ampoules that give my skin an extra boost.
From what I've tried, I recommend:
~Skin79: Snail Nutrition Ampoule (Amazon - affiliate link)
~Missha: Time Revolution Night Repair Science Activator Ampoule (Amazon - affiliate link)
~LJH: Tea Tree 90 Essence (Memebox / Amazon - affiliate links)
Step Seven: Sheet Mask
This is also an evening-only step, but it's one that I've found essential to my routine. Since I have a hard time finding several different serums at any one time that are affordable, I've essentially replaced having several layers of serums with a different sheet each night to claim new benefits. Also, by using a sheet mask, the nutritious goodness is pressed against my skin longer and given a better chance to absorb more than by just applying a serum.
I'll try any mask without alcohol or other harsh ingredients:
~You can check out past reviews here on my blog to find ones that I've enjoyed.
Step Eight: Moisturizer
This step is generally a lightweight moisturizer that I use in the morning before I apply my makeup or a bb cream, or in the evening before I apply a sleeping pack or heavier moisturizer that isn't suitable for daytime use with my oily skin.
From what I've tried, I recommend:
~It's Skin: Hyaluronic Acid Moisture Cream (Memebox / Amazon - affiliate links)
~SN: Plant Stem Cell Cream (Memebox - affiliate link)
Step Nine: Sleeping Pack
At night, I rely on extra moisture to counteract my skins' oil production for the following day. Sometimes, due to the weather or hormones, I just have super oily skin no matter what I do, but I've noticed by layering my moisturizers I have less oily skin the following day.
From what I've tried, I recommend:
~Too Cool For School: Pumpkin Sleeping Pack (Memebox / Amazon - affiliate links)
~Ladykin: Vanpir Dark Repairing Water Mask (TesterKorea)

My Skincare Picks of 2014
This year has been a long winding road of ups and downs and a new-found discovery of Asian beauty products that have taken my [once restricted to Western brands] routine by storm. While I still have a special love for products I'm able to find here in the United States, I cannot sing praises high enough for the items that seem to hold some sort of magic on my skin from Korea. This post will pull together my top skincare picks and tell you why I love them so much. Enjoy!
Makeup Remover: Missha Perfect BB Deep Cleansing Oil
I haven't been using this product very long, but it's my first cleansing oil and I'm in love. It's easier on my skin than makeup removing cloths, and doesn't leave much of an oily feeling behind after I rinse it away. It removes even my waterproof mascara! I always follow up with a regular cleanser afterwards.
I found this cleanser after I discovered the importance of using a low pH face wash. By using a cleanser with a pH between 4.5 and 6.5 (my skin actually prefers anything below 6 - but up to 6.5 is the common recommendation for most skin) I've been able to nearly eliminate my acne. This particular face wash contains no irritating ingredients, is gently, non-drying, and still manages to deep clean my skin.
Cleansing Tool: Clarisonic Mia 2
This was my first ever skincare splurge, which was soon followed by the Foreo Luna. I love the Clarisonic because it sloughs away dead skin cells and deep cleans my skin using sonic vibrations. Clarisonic claims it's safe enough to use twice a day, but to prevent over-exfoliation I'm currently only using it every other night. I will note, however, that I never use the lower speed on the Mia 2, and recommend saving the extra $50 by purchasing the Mia 1 if you're looking at this tool for yourself.
Wash-off Mask: 23 Years Old Air Laynic Pore Mask
This mask contains two nose/cheek area strips and a syringe with a special carbonated gel. When the gel is applied to a sheet, it bubbles up quickly and powerfully. It stings the skin slightly, but it's totally worth the major deep clean this mask delivers to your skin. I generally apply one sheet to my nose and cheeks, and cut down the other to apply it to my chin/jawline. After 15 minutes I remove the sheets, massage the gel into my face, and then rinse away. My pores have never been clearer.
Toner: Benton Aloe BHA Skin Toner
All my life I thought of a toner as just an extra product used to remove the excess crud from your skin that your face wash missed. This toner has been like a miracle in a bottle for my skin. It eliminated my cystic acne completely and has prevented new from forming. It doesn't dry out my skin and helps keep it especially clear.
Essence: Missha Time Revolution The First Treatment Essence
This essence contains 80% galactomyces which isn't as high as the PureBess 100% Galactomyces (obviously) but I feel like the extra ingredients offer something more to my skin that help brighten as well as prepare my skin for the upcoming goodness my routine has to offer.

Sheet Mask: Meme Mask
This is an amazing two-piece hydrogel mask that delivers superb moisture without increasing oiliness. It plumps fine lines and genuinely makes my face look and feel hydrated and bright. You can read my full review here on my blog.
While the name of this product says essence, I find it to be thick like a serum so that's how I use it. When I first discovered this product I felt like it worked great and ordered the rest of the Benton Snail Bee line to use as well. The high concentration of nutrients was too much as once since I didn't ease into them and I ended up having a slight reaction to the bee venom in all the products. After taking a break for a couple months I came back to just this serum and using it daily (without any other products with bee venom) has been a beautiful gift to my skin. It has lightened acne scars and definitely helps fight active acne while slowing new breakouts.
I only use this ampoule at night, but it's a repairing ampoule, as the name implies. It is supposed to hydrate and repair the skin, which I feel like it definitely helps with. Most nights I will use this ampoule then skip straight to either a sleeping pack or facial oil.
This was a recommendation from Tracy at Fanserviced-B for moisturizing acne prone skin and controlling oil at the same time. It minimizes redness and dark circles, it helps fight acne, and protects it from impurities. I use this during the day to help control oil and use it in the evening if I'm experiencing a breakout.
Sleeping Pack: TonyMoly Appletox Honey Cream
This isn't actually a sleeping pack, but actually a moisturizer. However, it's so rich, it works better with my skin type as a sleeping pack. As you can see it's a creamy gel that resembles honey, and it really smells like apples! It's very hydrating - I just love it!
There are few items I splurge on when I know there are cheaper alternatives, however this argan oil really is, somehow, the best I've ever used. I tried a couple different oils in the past purchased from Amazon and they broke me out terribly. This seems so much more pure which I know doesn't make sense, but even my oily acne prone skin just feeds off the goodness this oil has to offer. I use 3-4 drops when applying at night, and on no-makeup days I apply 2 drops to my face in the morning.
So these are my favorites I've found throughout this year. I know it's a pretty solid skincare routine in itself, but I'm ashamed to admit that there are many more products I alternate with that aren't here. Hopefully I'll have an updated skincare routine post up soon!
In the mean time...
Happy New Year!
