The company was started by myself, a WAHM (Work-athome-dad). I was looking for a cloth diaper detergent that was great for not just diapers, but for my entire family's laundry. It was important to my that the detergent I used was non-toxic, natural, eco-friendly, sensitive for my boy's bottoms, and got rid of the strong ammonia our diapers always had with other detergents. After experimenting for several months and doing a ton of research, Eco Sprout was born.
I manufacture the detergent and run the day-today business activities of Eco Sprout myself. Eco Sprout detergent is free from dyes, brighteners, enzymes, phosphates, SLS, and is 100% biodegradable. It is safe for cloth diapers. They not only come out of the wash smelling clean, but have zero to very little ammonia smell both when my sons pee and even in the diaper pail 2 days later!
~ Jared Edwards
Jared sent me a very generous sample pack which included a 2 ounce sample baggie of each of their scents, as well as a small (24ounce) bag of In The Buff (unscented). The scents include:
- Lavender Chamomile
- Warm Vanilla Sugar
- Fresh Linen
- Ocean Breeze
- Baby Powder
- Vanilla Sandalwood
- and a "seasonal" scent (in my package I received Pink Lemonade, however the current seasonal scent is Sweet Pumpkin Spice, YUM!)
FYI: All the scents will wash out ;)
I started off with the directions on their website for first time users. I filled our tub with hot water, 4 tablespoons of Eco Sprout, and added my clean diapers. I let everything soak overnight, and in the morning I ran everything through a hot wash in the top-loader and dried them. Of course they had started out clean, but I noticed that there was no "musty" smell to them that Rockin Green had assured me was probably just normal. These diapers had no smell to them, at all. I also immediately noticed that most set-in stains were lightened quite a bit, if not gone! Now it was time for the real test...
Bug showed no reactions to the diapers after they were washed in Eco Sprout. I never felt like we had a real ammonia problem, but I especially noticed in his night time diapers that his pee smelled a lot less pungent. As the next couple days went by, I noticed (or should I say didn't notice) the diaper pail, and it's sudden decrease in smell, though the pail is always left open for air. Then came our first wash, and it seemed like Eco Sprout had performed a miracle. The diapers came out just as clean and, uhm, non-smelly (lol) as they did when I washed the clean diapers after their soak. I swear I almost cried. I knew diapers shouldn't look dingy and smell "off". I knew it, and now my mind felt at ease.
I continued to use Eco Sprout on our diapers (and occasionally on Bug's clothing) with great results for about a month until my samples ran out. However, because of our water, I was using 4 tablespoons per load. While I never felt unsatisfied at any point with Eco Sprout, I need to figure how cost effective it would be for me to continue using it since we already pay $2 per load of laundry at the apartment as it is. It's definitely at the top of my list though!
Wash Cycle |
Rinse cycle- Please don't be discouraged by the dinginess of the water. I assure you, it's just our hard water, not detergent residue lol |
Eco Sprout offers 3 sizes of bags: large (96 oz/ 96-192 loads) @ $24.98, medium (48 oz/48-96 loads) @ $13.98 and small (24 oz/24-48 loads) @ $7.98 as well as samples bags (2 oz/2-4 loads) @ just $1.75 each! (loads based off of 2 tablespoons per load/1 tablespoon per load, using the minimum amount of detergent suggested)
You can purchase detergent, bottom balm, bottom spray or pail refresher directly from Eco Sprout! You can also connect with Eco Sprout on Facebook!
You can win your very own 24oz bag of Eco Sprout by entering my giveaway, HERE.
I am assuming you have hard water which is why you have to use 4 TBSP. To use less detergent, you can just add a capful of Calgon water softener to your wash cycle. That way the Calgon can break down the minerals in the water so your detergent does not have to work so hard and you can use less. We LOVE Eco Sprout detergent!
ReplyDeleteI love Eco Sprout! We have used Calgon with as we have hard water and it works really well.

I'd love to try this! I'm glad you found a detergent that works better for you!
ReplyDeleteI've only tried a couple of samples and it seemed to work well. I'd love to try a whole bag.
ReplyDeleteno experience with this detergent. Would love to win some to try and get my diapers really clean.
ReplyDeleteI'm also having issues with RNG (I think). We're having stink issues and RNG is the only thing I can think of that's causing it. I have a bag of Eco Sprout that is next in line to use as soon as I go through the RNG we have.

I haven't really tried the new RnG (have a bag just haven't really used it...been using up the old formula first) so I'm not sure if it will work for us now based on what you posted! We have super hard water too! This is one of the detergents I've been wanting to try on a full time basis but I need to finish what I have of RnG first! LOL I had received a sample included in a diaper purchase and I liked it.
ReplyDeleteI have heard good things about this detergent and would love to try it. We are using free and clear now and have to strip pretty often.
ReplyDeleteI have had samples of Eco Sprout in the past and LOVE it! I didn't notice stink issues and it was just awesome in general! I would love to get some more... but the checkbook says no right now. Boo. :( I guess I will have to settle for homemade detergent for now.
ReplyDeleteI love Eco Sprout it's my favorite cloth diaper detergent I have tried so far!
ReplyDeleteI currently use RnG Hard Rock for our really hard water. I want to try this detergent, but I don't want to have to use 4 tablespoons of detergent per wash (or have to buy more things to add to my water!) so that is very discouraging, but I'd still love to give it a try!
ReplyDeleteWe just switched to Eco Sprout last week (I ordered the Pumpkin Spice scent- it is delicious!) and so far I love it!
ReplyDeleteI have always been curious whether ecosprout works better than other detergents. I currently use a cloth diaper friendly detergent but I still occasionally have ammonia issues. I would love to try ecosprout.
ReplyDeleteI haven't tried this detergent yet, but it sounds great. I'd love to try it for my cloth dipes!

I've never used Eco sprout but would love to try it!
ReplyDeleteLove Eco Sprout deterent! Gets out the stink and stains better than any other detergent we've tried. And we've tried quite a few.
ReplyDeleteI've never tried Eco Sprout, but want to. I've used bumGenius detergent and currently RnG with mixed results. We had horrible build up with the bG and got rid of that when switching to RnG, but now have ammonia stink problems. Oh the trials of laundering cloth diapers! It would be nice to find a foolproof detergent and routine once and for all.
ReplyDeleteAll those scents sound so yummy! Would love to win to try this detergent on LO's diapers.
ReplyDeleteI love EcoSprout! I first tried it as a sample and now I use it for all my cloth diaper laundry (and I have a lot, I have twins in diapers). I haven't had a single issue or had to strip since I switched.
ReplyDeleteI would love for my diapers to lose that slightly 'off' smell that we have been struggling with for so long, however, I am not sure how I feel about them being scented like other things so I would probably stick with the no fragerance kind.
ReplyDeletei havent tried eco sprout yet but i would love to try it out, it sounds like it would get the job done and im really glad i read this review

I have not tried an eco detergent, so I would love to give this a try! Thanks!
ReplyDeleteI haven't tried Eco Sprout detergent yet but I liked the fact that it gets rid of strong ammonia in diapers that other detergents don't get rid of.

I find it curious that they go to the trouble of having scented detergent if it washes out... But it's nice to know you've had success with it, even over Rockin Green (which everyone seems to swear by)
ReplyDeleteThe scents seem wonderful and I love that it was started by a SAHD!!!

I've been wanting to try this detergent! I can't believe they have scents, I've missed the smell of freshly clean clothes =)
ReplyDeleteI love how it comes in different scents! i would love to try the warm vanilla!
ReplyDeleteI'd love to try this detergent, their scents sound so great!
ReplyDeleteI've never tried Eco Sprout, though I have heard of it. From your review though, it sounds like something I need!!
